About the HMS Ganges Museum

The training on board HMS Ganges commenced in 1866 when it was decided to increase the number of boys being trained for sea. She was moored at Mylor, Falmouth and later anchored off Shotley in 1899. The boys training moved ashore in 1905 where it continued until the closure in 1976.

The boys were evacuated during WWII to HMS St George on the Isle of Man, to continue their training. At this time, HMS Ganges was used for the training of ‘Hostilities Only’ ratings.

The museum holds a large interesting collection of official and personal photographs, documents and artefacts, which are ideal for research purposes. Many of the exhibits, dating from the 1890’s to 1976, depict the way boys were trained for a Royal Naval career. The museum also houses the ships Figurehead, clocks and other memorabilia from the original site.
